Tale of Two Presidents

Wow, who’d have thought that our very own Governor, Kathleen Sebelius, would have been less than forthcoming when asked about her relationship with, and the money she’s accepted for her various campaigns from her pal, George Tiller.
Sorry Governor, and not that it matters to you, but a lot of us just aren‘t buying it. Just like we didn’t buy it we when you said it was just an over-sight when you had to catch up on the back taxes you owed. If a regular guy like, say, myself were in such position, we’d probably be sitting in jail right now. But I know, like always, you’ll be given a pass. No matter what you do or what you say, your supporters are okay with it. Whatever.
Sorry, I just wanted to get that off my chest. What I really wanted to talk about today is our new president and his predecessor. You know, President Wonderful and President Horrible.
Remember after the attacks of 9-11 when President Horrible authorized the use of wiretaps in an effort to ward off future terrorist attacks. Remember that? Remember how he was accused of trampling our constitutional rights and all that stuff. Remember how he was compared to Hitler and Joseph Stalin once the media got wind of this practice?
It’s funny. Now that President Wonderful is doing the exact same thing, and some even say he’s expanded the program, and all of a sudden, it‘s okay. President Wonderful’s supporters are saying things like, well, it only makes sense that the President should have the ability to track groups of people that want to do us harm. Hmmm, weird.
How about President’s Horrible’s out of control spending. His administration spent money like there was no tomorrow. The country was outraged. Remember that? Remember how they stood shoulder to shoulder from the rooftops to denounce our crippling national debt? Remember how they cried at the top of their lungs that it was unfair to dump such a burden on future generations.
Now we have President Wonderful’s economic policies that have already tripled if not quadrupled, President Horrible’s national debt (can you say, multiple trillions) that will probably be passed on to our great-great-great grand kids and somehow, it just makes sense. President Wonderful’s supporters love to claim he’s doing the only thing he can and is only digging his way out of President Horrible’s mess.
Now I’m not an expert on digging holes and it’s very possible I’m wrong here, but to me it just makes sense that if you start digging in an already huge hole, the only thing you’ll end up with is a bigger hole.
Remember when President Horrible authorized the use of force after the attacks of 9-11? Remember how most of the country stood with him in that decision? Remember when all the politicians, Republican and Democrats alike were lining up to give their speeches? They all wanted to be seen as being tough on terror. Remember that?
And now all the sudden, President Wonderful has authorized the use of force against a bunch of ignorant pirates who believe that somehow they have a right to take over ships at sea and demand millions of dollars for the return of the ships and crews. They’re used to getting their way. They’re used to the crews of the ships they attack just giving up. They’re used to companies simply paying the ransom as a way to get their crews and ships back.
Here’s what these ignorant fools aren’t used to though. They’re not used to dealing with Americans. And they’re sure as hell not used to dealing with the United States Navy and the Navy Seals that brought an abrupt end to their little party earlier this week.
And it was all brought directly to them by our very own, President Wonderful, who ordered the use of force and the U.S. Navy, who executed that order.
Mr. President, thank you, you definitely got this one right.

Maybe you agree with me. Maybe you’d like to call me out on something I’ve said. Stop on by the blog and tell me so at: www.rm235.blogspot.com or e-mail me at: www.kevinmcginty@sbcglobal.net

  1. I usually attempt to avoid offering writing critiques, but you have used an excellent device here with the "President Horrible/Wonderful" thing. It's a very efficient method for comparison/contrast, and it keeps the basis for c/c consistent. But, most importantly, it deepens the dimension of the whole essay. Yes, there are amazing similarities between to ideologically different leaders. But you've accomplished something that I always pleaded with my students to try: reveal something deeper about us, the readers. You've reminded us that placing too much hope or faith in a party or a leader is one of the most ridiculous things we can do. While I agree that political participation is nearly as necessary as flushing the toilet, it's also nearly as ridiculous. Shakespeare's Fools were wiser than kings. So should all writers be. Good job, Kevin!

  2. Kevin, I think Fred just gave you an A.

  3. Damn good to hear from you, Open Road. I thought maybe you'd skipped the country or something.

Not sure I deserve the A though.

I gotta be honest, Fred. I didn't exactly come up with the idea of the "President Horrible/Wonderful" thing on my own.

Here's the deal. A guy I've gotten to know and who I've had many political discussions with since I've been in Nebraska has been refering to Obama as "President Wonderful, as he rolls his eyes, for the last few day now.

I asked him where he got it from. He said he'd read it somewhere but didn't remember exactly where or when.

Anyway, it cracked me up, so I just kind of took the ball and ran with it. Sorry if I've let anyone down by doing so.

But Fred, you brought up an exellent point about people placing too much faith in a party or a leader.

I was amazed by the level of blind and unconditional faith people had for Obama(President Wonderful) during the campaign.

To tell you the truth, it was a little scary.

I'm glad you enjoyed the column, but just so you know, I can't take all the credit for it either. Thank you for stopping by...

  4. Well, hello, Anonymous, you sweetheart, you. I just wish you could read the English language. I didn't give anybody an A. I haven't taught high school in six years nor on the university level in seventeen years. We're talking about a device, here, not the essay topic, which I have not seen done quite this way on television or in any of the periodicals I read. A device is a literary tool that can be used over and over, and this particular device works well with the comparison/contrast mode. Sorry if I'm wasting words on you. Nice to see you're still around. I hope you live a long and wonderful life! :) :) :)

  5. I'm glad you stopped by, Fred. You kinda keep me grounded.

If you hadn't replied to our little buddy before I'd seen his latest offer of help, I probably would have something stupid.

I'd have probably told him to go screw himself or something like that. I might have even called him a coward for being afraid to identify himself. Who knows, I might have even said his Mama wears combat boots, and that his sister's ugly. Who knows?

Anyway, like I said, it's a good thing you got here first. LOL!!!

But like you, Fred, I hope Anonymous lives a long and wonderful life. As long as he's around, I know for a fact, I'm not the biggest loser out there.

    Have a good day all...

  7. As someone who voted for Obama, (and given the same choices would vote for him again), I have - to my friends and to blogs around the ether - openly criticized him for his position regarding Bush's and Cheney's nazi tactics...

Wire-tapping, kidnapping, false imprisonment, etc. I find it all immoral, and will say so again and again no matter who is allowing such evilness to continue.

  8. Thanks for stopping by, would have voted. So tell me, where do we go from here?

What do you suggest we do next? Do we simply drop the wire-tapping, knowing full well we have groups plotting to kill as many Americans as possible. Is it kidnapping when when we capture a terrorist on the battle ground? In your opinion, did we kidnap the Somoli pirate (Terrorist) who was part of the group of thugs holding the American Captain against his will? Do you think Obama was wrong when he authorized the U.S. Navy to kill theses people in order to gain the realese of the Captain?

Now that we've captured one of them, what do you think we should do with him?

And no, I'm not trying to be a smartass. These are honest questions and I'm very interested to hear what you have to say.

I'm sure you and I will disagree on most topics of the day. But your opinions are welcome here. I want this blog to be a place we can all get together and have an honest debate over whatever.

    Stop by anytime...

  9. Hey, you hang in there, Kevin. Anybody who can write a column like this one MUST learn from success-- not from simpletons like our anonymous friend. I must admit that he reminds me how important it is to be kind to the dull and ignorant.

  10. Well said Fred. The guy just doesn't get it, does he?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes. I will call them Obama's nazi tactics. In fact, they already are. He cannot blame these sorts of decisions on the prior administration.

BTW...I am NOT anonymous. I don't know who that jerk is. I didn't read his comments till I saw fredwrite's comment.

and p.s. I am here to be a smart ass. I was deliberately inflammatory. I'm sorry. I didn't mean it to be a jerk like anonymous was. If I'd seen his comment, I would have worded mine differently. I was just trying to be a brat.

My only point was that as a voter of Obama, I have no problem criticizing him for what I feel are immoral acts.

  12. Good to hear from you, Cat. Even if you are a "pinko commie."

First off, there's no need to apologize. You said what was on your mind and that's what I want people to be able to do here. Besides, everybody needs to be a smartass and a brat every once in a while. LOL.

Do me a favor though. I posed several questions in my earlier post. I'd like to hear what you'd do about some of the issues Bush faced and now it's your guy, Obama. What would you have done differently?

Still, I'm not trying to be a smartass. Just trying to have an honest debate.

And just you know, next week's column's probably going to piss you off too. Feel free to stop on by and let me have it...
