More than just some campground somewhere in Colorado...

Ah, despite this God-awful heat it's good to be home.

I mean, home is where all my stuff is and where my people are always close by. But it is nice to get away every once in a while.

By now most of you know my family and I went on our semi-sorta, yearly Colorado vacation.

Most people (including my kids when they were growing up) would think my idea of packing up and going to the same destination year after year would be the most boring idea there ever was.

Maybe I'm just a boring guy.

It all started pretty much by accident the first time my wife and I hauled our little popup camper and three kids out to Colorado.

We got a late start leaving Topeka and didn't get to Colorado Springs till somewhere around midnight.

I was tired, the kids were fighting, and my lovely wife was bitching about something or another so I pulled into the very first campground (still inside Colorado Springs city limits) we came to, played my "man card" and boldly announced this was where we were going to spend the night, now shut up.

Those of you who know that lovely wife of mine already know how far playing my "man card" got me.

She looked around and said something like, "you're crazy if you think the kids and I are going to spend a single night here, it looks like a damned ghetto!"

Fine then!

We pulled back out onto the road and headed west toward Woodland Park, and there it was.

A few miles west of Manitou Springs, on the south side of the road, we saw a sign that led us to what was to become our family vacation destination for the next 20 years, Lone Duck Campground.

We pulled in and I wasn't surprised to find the office already closed but what did surprise me was the sign on the door saying something like, "go ahead and pick an open spot and come see us in the morning."

I knew right then that the owners of the place were probably good people.

And meeting them the next morning confirmed it.

Much like my own family they were young and had little kids.

Among the things we hauled out there were bicycles and skate boards.

Scattered around the office were bicycles and a little kid's wagon.

After a few years we ditched the popup and got a bigger travel trailer.

The kids who by now were teenagers decided they needed their own tent site.

As they grew older their toys got bigger and eventually we'd have a caravan with my wife, youngest son, and I hauling the camper, my oldest son with a trailer hauling his jeep, his best friend, Fred with a trailer hauling a couple dirt bikes and 4 wheelers, and my daughter and her husband hauling themselves and my first grandson.

Over the years we had multiple vehicle breakdowns along the way that at the time seemed like game changers. But looking back we all just laugh about it.

It'd take all day to tell you about the adventures we had back in those early days so I'll just describe them in one, simple word.

"Epic!"

Things were easier back then, too.

For the most part the only thing we had to consider when scheduling the whole thing was when school started.

Now that they're all grown, married, and have their own kids and lives to take care of it's a lot harder to make it happen.

But we keep trying.

Since they now have trailer and cabins for rent we no longer haul the camper out there which is fine with me.

It's funny, once you get older, you finally realize you're not going to live forever, so for me this a way to give them all something they'll remember the rest of their lives.

Whether it's fishing in the pond, playing pin ball at the arcade, swimming in the pool, stumbling out of bed at 6:00 in the morning for breakfast, or sitting around the campfire rehashing the adventures of the day, they'll all remember at least bits and pieces of it.

Building memories.

To me, that's what it's all about.

Go ahead and ask any of my kids or grand kids where we went on vacation.

Obviously, we went to Colorado but they're all going to tell you, "we went to Lone Duck."

And Steve and Lisa, if you're reading this, thank you so much for being a part of it...

  4. Gotta love those mountains. Looks like a lot of fun was had.

Speaking of Manitou Springs, many many years ago, a friend and I decided to do a Labor Day run out there in my Celica.

Just checking out the sights around there, and all. Decided to go up Pike's Peak. As we got higher and higher, the car seemed to be losing...something. Finally, it just wouldn't run. Suspecting we were close to the top, we took off walking. Yep...we were only a few hundred yards away. We went in, got a soda, and pondered the situation. We had determined that my alternator had died. What to do?

Well, being tighter on funds (now that I was gonna have to buy an alternator), and being young and invincible, we decided the only thing TO do was let gravity help us out. So, we got the car turned around, pointing downhill, and let'er roll! I decided the best thing was roll a little, not too fast, stop, let the brakes cool...repeat. Took a few hours but we got down. On the last stretch at the bottom going into town, I let'er rip and roll and spotted an auto parts store a few blocks inside town. Freewheeled into the parking lot, barely enough to make it up into it, my buddy had to jump out and keep the dead car rolling across it.

Spent a day's more adventure's worth of money, cut the trip short, waited until morning and headed home.

The next paycheck was spent on new brakes.😂

  12. Now...a must-read, courtesy zero hedge and a guy named Brodsky: "This is a Red Flag Warning"

Stated in this article: " the conservative wing, which tried to block raising the ceiling in the past, has signalled it will again dig in its heels to force the government to balance its budget."
Mnuchin, however, says Treasury has "options" if congress doesn't raise it...options not specified but their priority would be making the payments on all that debt to prevent default. Payments to government contractors would be delayed and face restructure and services of course would be cut back.
This report is hard hitting and reads like Realville, like it or not. I see it as a heads-up for the very near future...and crashes generally occur on october...so: forewarned is forearmed and I hope to be disappointed on this one...

  19. Now back to my Pikes Peak thrill ride story I alluded to this morning.

It's actually pretty similar to the one Nunya told this morning.

My wife and I went to Colorado Springs for our honeymoon.

I had a 75 Ford pickup. It was actually a pretty good truck except I'd been having problems with the starter solenoid.

I didn't happen very often but every once in a while I had a hell of a time getting it to start.

I should have fixed it before we left but back then money was extremely tight so we decided it's be fine and off we went.

We stayed at a place in Manitou Springs called Park Row Lodge which is still there today.

Anyway, we decided to make the trip to the top of Pikes Peak and off we went.

Wouldn't you know it, the starter decided to start acting up again but it only took a couple tries so we were good to go, right?

    Wrong.

Because of the altitude the old truck was already running like crap by thew time we got to the summit.

I went ahead and shut it off and headed into the gift shop, looked around for a while then got ready to go back down.

I must have tried 20 or 30 time to get the started to engage but it wasn't gonna happen.

It was a 4 speed so I asked a guy in a Chevy Blazer to give me a push and I figured I could pop the clutch and life would be good.

    Nope.

Because the altitude was still messing it up that old truck wasn't about to start.

Ended up coasting about half way down, power brakes, steering and all.

The brakes were smoking and my new wife was about to lose her mind.

We've gone to the top a couple more times since those days but it we took the train both times.

Fords and solenoids must have been a thing back then. Had one eons ago when kids were little and money was tight..brother showed me the pliers trick. Put the handles of them one to each solenoid end and voila! Car will start...key had to be on the "on" position and in park. Only down side was you'd get a jolt like a slight shock by doing that but got us by until payday and replacement.

  20. love the story - lemme guess..... the folks in Colorado instantly knew your truck was from Kansas (smiles). They adjust their carburators a little differently over there to make their vehicles run easier in the altitudes.

How many "do not pass" and "pass with care" signs did you pass along the way?

    1. lol (smiles)

we went to Colorado for 10 days with the boys, teenagers. had a dodge caravan, took out the middle bench seat, shoved the back (third bench seat)forward to make room for the luggage. made perfect sense....two teenage boys, plenty of leg room for them and the cooler of pop, water, sandwiches, etc., in the cooler in front of them.

I had a choice, go to my 20 year class reunion with TWest or vacation with my family - no brainer - family first every time.... moments with the family only comes once.

Ok, by the time we reached Denver we didn't realize we were climbing on the interstate - until the little 3.0 6 cyclinder engine was doggin pretty bad... people passing us up and some not too friendly.

told the story to my Aunt Helen.... her reply "your car is from Kansas isn't it? and she smiled. She said they adjust their carburators a little differently to get around a little easier, poor gas mileage, but at least they could get around.

P.S. we chickened out on driving up Pike's Peak..... we took the cog train and my younger son....bless his heart - bad case of altitude sickness..... the tourguide said when we get to the top, water is the elixir.... it replenishes the oxygen in the blood.

Maybe now the rest of them will tell McConnell and co to take a flying leap and craft a good bill worth signing. 26. I like Kevin's story! You haven't experienced white-knuckle anxiety-driving until you've coasted down a steep, winding mountainside with your power brakes and power steering disabled, knowing that at any moment the brakes could completely fail and send you careening to the bottom over the side! Like I said, it took a LONG time to get down. I didn't let it go very fast, at all. And, we stopped often, to let the brakes cool off. I knew I was getting those rear brakes hot, using the parking brake which had the handle in the center console. Trying to steer and use that thing at the same time...it was an adventure!! It was a 74 Celica ST. 😊

  35. I'm not that astounded that Keri was able to get the Board's attention; but I am a bit surprised that she could have such vague accusations. Usually it is an ex-client who complains. But once the complaint is made, they don't focus on the complainant.

And Cats, I don't mean to sound all arrogant here (and get people on my ass again), but the real head to head contest here is: Harvard (Summa Cum Laude) BA, Yale JD vs. Non-trad Washburn attendee. That's sort of like winning the Cosmo League Tournament and deciding you're ready to take on the Cleveland Indians. So while you may be reminded of Buffy, I'm more apt to look at it like a field mouse flipping off a coyote.

WHAAAAT? What was she doing? The ol' "far-left liberal running as Republican to destroy from within" ploy?!!

Musta got that idea from Lucinda.😂

  43. Revealing report on Iran mess on Conservative Review...seems Tillerson and McMaster wanted this bullshit and won out over protests by Pompeo and Bannon and got Trump to recertify. They have to recertify every 90 days so this is twice now, and Iran is pissing around and getting away with it as usual.
Also: Tillerson still maintaining his oilman ties with Qatar and Russia...
McMaster is going with appointments of people in the Obama camp, against admin wishes...
And too damn many Obama holdovers in both of their departments.
So who's getting played here, besides the American people? I had, like a lot of people, thought these were good appointments but looks like they are members of the same old deep state players who, by virtue of money and position, have been lurking around the hallways and influencing foreign policy for decades now.

  45. "Murder of Green Berets in Jordan Exposed Secretive CIA Syria Program Details"

Story at zero hedge and ranks right up there with the horrors of Benghazi...3 of our finest paid with their lives last year and the Jordanian government as well as lame media and the Obama regime tried like hell to keep the truth buried. A 4th Green Beret who survived blew the whistle and families of these soldiers demanded answers. Also helping to uncover the truth is SOFREP investigative journalist Jack Murphy, former special ops Ranger.
This article is long and bluntly informative.
It also points up why we should NEVER get involved in any business of overthrowing dictators (Assad in this case), foreign entanglements in general and training and arming so-called "moderate" rebels...
Which we are still doing, by the way.

  46. Here's the Urinal being completely "Fake News" dishonest, again, right from their editorial (propaganda) staff:

    http://cjonline.com/opinion/columns/2017-07-18/editorial-moran-deserves-partial-credit-health-care

OH! They're "praising" Moran, and lumping him, Mike Lee and Rand Paul in with that liberal infiltrator (much like Keri Strahler or Lucinda) Susan Collins, who wants to greatly expand Obamacare to destroy this country even faster. Mike Lee, especially, and Rand Paul are trying to hold our elected representatives to their promise of doing the proper and wise thing to "REPEAL" that unholy mess that Obama's gang of thugs forced upon the country.

Reading this tripe, you'd think they all opposed the new bill for the same reasons...which is 100% false.

And, reading this tripe, you'd think millions upon millions of people are going to have "health care" RIPPED AWAY from them!

"Editorial: Moran deserves partial credit on health care"

"The Senate health bill would have left tens of millions of Americans without coverage"

    OH...the HORRORS!!! Those POOR PEOPLE?!

Naw. Those would be the people who were ticked off and voluntarily dropped the unconstitutional FORCING of buying an ultra-expensive REALLY crappy product.

But, you wouldn't know that from this "Fake News" editorial...would you?

No wonder nobody trusts the Topeka Capital-Journal, anymore.

  47. Overjoyed, they print this tripe:

"Local school officials favor Supreme Court’s jurisdiction over Kansas school finance case"

    http://cjonline.com/news/local/state-government/2017-07-18/local-school-officials-favor-supreme-court-s-jurisdiction

    Only one problem.

Courts have no authority to decide "budgets". There is absolutely nothing in the Kansas Constitution that grants them that authority. Look it up. Read it.

    http://www.kslib.info/constitution

State budgets are solely the responsibility of the Kansas state legislature.

I suspect they keep getting away with this because most people are unaware of what's actually in the Kansas Constitution, and they figure that as long as they can keep getting away with having the courts decide budgets, then they will.

I'm really surprised that Trabert isn't all over this.

Seriously, there is NOTHING in there that gives the courts the ability to tamper with the budget. There is more in there that PREVENTS them from doing so. If anyone can find anything that does allow them to, please share? I'd like to know.

  48. YIKES!!! That is one PISSED-OFF looking liberal!!! (But...aren't they all?!)

    http://cjonline.com/news/local/state-government/2017-07-18/sarah-coats-auburn-social-worker-and-dcf-critic-seeks-kansas

"She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from Washburn University."

Oh...so she's had total immersion into "Liberal Indoctrination". looks fairly young. Guessing she's never really had a real job, in school for all those years being dunked in the "Socialist Soup".

It appears she went from that insulated-from-reality environment pretty much right into social work. We know she's angry, because she claims she got fired for trying to organize a union at KVC (Kaw Valley Center), an adoption and foster care outfit.

Now, I'm not attacking "social work", per se. We need good people who care about that. We need "responsible" people, with a sense of what "the real world" is all about.

Some get so centered on nothing but wanting more taxpayer money dumped into THEIR system, that they don't mind the totally-insane concept of taxing people into lower standards of living, which in turn, causes financial stress, which in turn causes family stress, which in turn helps to cause the circumstances that lead to the conditions that cause people to get sent to them. What're they trying to do...drum up business?

People like that who haven't really held private-sector jobs cannot empathize with those who do.

Sadly, she's just out of my district, so I can't vote against her radical liberalism.

BTW, just a hunch. May be a wise thing to confirm that she actually really lives in the district in which she's running?

Y'know...just to be sure, and "transparent"?

I'd bet she and less-than-honest faux-Republican, Krazy Keri, could be BFFs, they have so much in common! (well, except their "party affiliations", anyway!)

  49. Another hatchet-job from the Urinal, this one from Rankamateur Ranker.

    http://cjonline.com/news/local/2017-07-18/sen-jerry-moran-supports-obamacare-repeal-without-replacement

"As support for health care overhaul crumbled Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran joined President Donald Trump and other Republicans in an unsuccessful push to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement, despite protests from constituents."

Well..."constituents"? Sure. But, mostly liberals who would oppose him, and Trump, on ANYTHING. WHAT-evah!

"Collins was one of two Republican senators to oppose a 2015 repeal-only bill that passed the Senate. That measure would have revoked the federal government’s authority to run health care exchanges, scrapped subsidies, and ended efforts to expand Medicaid. It also would have halted penalties for those who don’t buy insurance and employers who don’t offer it. The Congressional Budget Office estimated 32 million more people would be uninsured by 2026 under that plan, the Congressional Budget Office estimated."

“I do not think that it’s constructive to repeal a law that is so interwoven within our health care system without having a replacement plan in place,” she said in a statement on Twitter."

No, fake-Republican (just like Strahler). It wasn't "constructive" to concoct "a law" the got healthcare so interwoven into our system, in the first place, you looney-liberal twit! SHUT UP AND GO AWAY!

"Meanwhile in Topeka, as many as 12 members of Topeka Indivisible gathered outside the Frank Carlson Federal Building, the home of Roberts’ local office."

WOW!!! As many as TWELVE!!! That could have trunedinto a full-blown riot, with all those angry liberals!!! (Yeah...that's a LOT of opposition...huh? Hahaaaa!)

"Brendan Beyer, one of the group’s organizers, said they were encouraged by Moran’s decision not to support the GOP’s replacement plan, but a full repeal would “triple” opposition to the GOP health care platform."

TRIPLE opposition?! You mean...there'd be THIRTY-SIX people out there ranting and raving?! Call in the Guard! LOL!

And, then, the comments are chock-full of knuckleheads.

Good grief. All this "Fake News" from the Urinal, and morons are feeding like carp at the marina.

If any sort of ethical journalism class still exists anywhere, the cj could be highly useful in illustrating what NOT to print and what to avoid.
Editorials should be fact-based opinion and not narrative- based propaganda. If I wanted that I'd read Pravda.
Classic example of a rag that has been reduced to something fit for people who have lost any ability to think for themselves and are incapable of separating truth from fiction.
