Kansas State Fair: Part One

Let's do something different for a while. How about we just get away from politics all together. Well, with 9-11 and the Tea Parties all over the country, that might be hard to commit to.

I've just spent the evening packing for a three week road trip to Hutchinson, Ks. to work the State Fair. This is the second time I've worked it. It's a hell of a lot of work but there's always a little free time to check out the sights too. Especially this year, the boss had this brain fart a while back and mentioned it might be cool to have a travel trailer for us to hang in whenever we had a little down-time. I told him, oh yeah, that'd be a hell of an idea.

Anyway, one thing led to another and now they've decided since they went to all the expense and trouble of getting that trailer I should just sleep there too.

So her we are. I'll be heading out by 6:00 in the morning. And you're more than welcome to come along...

  1. There are times would love to live in a very small trailer...something about 15 feet long, totally self-contained, and rigged so it could park and connect to sewer and electrical for long periods of time...like in a trailer park.

I find that the older I get, the fewer household objects I need: one plate, one bowl, 4 teaspoons, 2 coffee mugs, etc; two changes of clothes, 8 changes of underthings...(in case I can't get to the laundry but once a week); one laptop with wifi (don't need a TV with internet episodes of my favorite crime dramas), and that plays DVDs...

A place to sleep where I can lock the door...that has paper and ink and a laptop. Yep. I'd be good with that.

I see below where some moron is calling you names again. Tomorrow when I log back one, I'm gonna screw up some energy and jump in with a snotty comment to him.

Last week they shot me full of morphine and compazine and I think I slept for 24 hours straight. I hadn't slept for 2 days cuz of hurting...I guess I needed the sleep.

I've seen more TV in the last week than I saw in the whole of last year. NCIS, Bones; Law and Order (SVU, mostly); Monk; House; Devine Design; Designed to Sell; Frasier; Will and Grace. Geez.

Please don't join the circus, Kevin. We'd miss you.

  2. Great to see you here, Cat!

Wow, this brings back memories. After my first divorce, my dad gave me his 22-foot trailer to live in. Stayed there six months. Loved it! Even in January. 'Course, life was a lot less complicated back then. Had kind of a Thoreau thing going there for a while. Simplicity has plenty to teach.

But, maybe not at a State Fair! Have fun, Buddy!

  3. You know, the camper was the thing I was the most worried about. It's the whole not knowing what you're getting into thing.

It turned out that my worries were all unfounded. It's a really nice 5th wheel and so far, everything works fine.

Oh yeah, we agree on the TV thing too. I rarely watch it anyway. I tried telling that to guy I'm working the fair with. Still, he went to great lenghts yesterday to make sure I had one. He even went to three different places before he found the right converter box, you know, the thing that replaced the old rabbit ears.

So have I watched it? No.

And we also agree with the need for less stuff. I have a hell of a time trying to convince my kids not to but me anything for birthdays and Christmas. I try like hell to make them understand, "I DON'T WANT OR NEED ANYMORE STUFF!" They don't listen to me either.

And, Fred, I'm having a ball and I'll try to keep you guys updated as time goes on. Today was pretty easy. Tomorrow once the gates open, everything changes...
