Lighten Up Friday...

I came across the meme yesterday morning and almost spit coffee all over my monitor so I figured, what the hell.

Enjoy your weekend, guys and gals...

  8. Good morning T Town dwellers. I spoke to my sister yesterday and she told me y'all had some bad weather a day or so back. Hope everyone is okay. I was catching up on emails Tuesday morning and around 4:00 in the morning the tornado sirens started blowing a warning signal. We had strong winds and heavy rain but that was about all, thank goodness. Being from Kansas when I hear the tornado sirens it gets my attention. Worked out in the yard today, getting ready for spring plantings. Spring is right around the corner and I am already seeing my spring bulbs peeking out of the soil. My lemon tree is already blooming but it is still in the garage. I guess I will need to pollenate some of the blossoms if I plan to get any lemons this year.

Looking forward to the Mueller report being released for Barr's review. I still haven't determined if I trust Barr or not. He has history going back to the Iran Contra scandal and he has close ties to the Bush family so I have a feeling of distrust with him. Collins made a good showing and I like him alot. I am disappointed about the 12 donkey's that turned their back on the American people and the border wall ordeal. I can't stand Romney. He is one sneaky dude.

TGIF and hope y'all have a great weekend!

    2. Yes, it was pretty standard old Borscht Belt humor. Sadly, it came as no surprise that nobody seemed to 'get it'. Wonder what Susan Sontag would have said after a visit to Topeka ? I cringe to think about it.

    3. I think you have to be a certain age to go for Borscht Belt humor. My dad loved it. Me, umm. I can get some of it, but it definitely appeals to an older crowd here. Maybe in Northern Virginia.

Insofar as Susan Sontag, again, um. My real center of gravity here would still be Concordia (where I spend most weekends). I wonder WTH she would think of THAT?

Rikki, have somebody help you with this. I wrote regarding Topekans

" People have almost no sense of irony. Perhaps you don't have enough Jews. No, I am not Jewish. This is what I mean.... I'm afraid far too many Topekans would just scratch their heads...."

And that is exactly what you did. You just don't get it. Topeka is doomed. There is nothing anti-Semitic AT ALL about what I wrote. In fact, I celebrate Jewish humor. No, I'll say it again, I never met Ms. Bernardi , but I'm sure she's a talented and charming individual.

I was in Houston about a year ago for a conference. I decided to stop by The Menninger Clinic since it left Topeka to see how things were going. Let's just say they were far happier in Houston than Topeka. One consistent observation about Topeka - "people just don't get it" ( and I'm cleaning up that comment ). You are a case in point.

Regarding suicides, the comment, seen on bumper stickers all over Topeka had nothing to do with suicide. It was directed at life in Topeka. Try to connect the dots next time.

  14. Okay, let's do something I used to do on CJ. Informal polling. Gotta be better than the polling before the 2016 election.

    Who's your favorite comedian?

For me: Jonathan Winters. I loved his TV program in the late 60s, early 70s.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Captain, for me - I have several faves, can't pick just one (smiles)

Jerry Clower, Jonathan Winters, George Carlin, Rich Little, Flip Wilson, Ray Romano, Rodney Dangerfield....

I also liked variety shows: Laugh-in, Smothers Brothers

  23. I agree with Tom, Jonathan Winters was the best. Comedy is very idiosyncratic, what's hilarious for one person falls flat on another.

To help keep it going, what is the best comedy series on classic TV?

First category: Sitcoms - My answer, close one with a bunch from the 60s bunched up together - Hogan's Heroes, Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies. Underrated - Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and The Good Guys

Second category: Variety Shows (now extinct) - I have to say the Jonathan Winters Show and my dad's old fave - The Garry Moore Show. You can almost consider Carol Burnett a part of that program, she got her start on it and the format is just about the same. I've seen episodes of Garry Moore recently. I hadn't realized then just how good his program was.

  26. Who the hell is anonymous ? If I were a betting man, I suspect it's Howdy, but not a big deal. And what the hell is an "eastern shore crab" ? There are Chesapeake Bay crabs, and then there is the Eastern Shore. It's a bit piece of land. Very old. You pass through on the way to the beach towns. About 90 miles E. of DC.

And someone said something about names.... well, okay - who the hell is sargejr.Jim ? Or Skippey ? Are these names on their birth certificates ?

And Nancy has run into the realities of the Senate ? Really ? Then how d'you explain the following Alexander, Blunt, Collins, Lee, Moran, Murkowski, Paul, Portman, Romney, Rubio, Toomey, and Wicker. ALL voted against Trump's emergency funding for a dumb ass well that will slow almost nobody down. Funny how Mar a Lago had to ... um, er, "dismiss" a ton of illegals Trump employed. Naw, he didn't know...

Rumor around town is that more senators are reaching the boiling point with Don Cadet Bone Spurs. In other words they've had it. He seems to think he's a modern day Don Corleone. But the country did not elect him, and his support has been lacking. Now Don Cadet wants to cut your SS, and Medicare. For a town like Topeka, that's your lifeline.

  39. I agree with that. All the while President Trump was trying to work with Congress about the Wall...he was getting his legal ducks in a row....i.e. he was preparing for legal battle all the while.

He's got Attorneys General saying that he has done things right that in addition to all of President Trump's supporters who agree with him (which by the way is a very large number regardless of the liberal mainstream media).
